openSUSE ALP: Mountains to Climb
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.Год назад
The Kick-Off meeting for the openSUSE ALP Architecture meeting started with the above presentation from Richard Brown (Distribution Architect @ SUSE), covering the following: - What is SUSE ALP? - What SUSE be building, and when. - How Richard sees the 'gap' between what SUSE ALP will be and what our current Leap user base expects. - Richard's initial thoughts on how this group might want to ad...
Why you should be running the MicroOS Desktop
Просмотров 18 тыс.Год назад
The MicroOS Desktop started as a hairbrained, poorly thought out, "lets see what happens" concept at an openSUSE Conference not so long ago. It's since become perhaps the most stable, reliable, and exciting Desktop offering the openSUSE Project offers. This brief talk will provide a brief overview of the MicroOS Desktop project, advice for newcomers to the platform, and an open invitation as to...
FOSDEM 2023 - I was wrong about Flatpak, AppImage, and Snap (Containerised Apps Presentation)
Просмотров 8 тыс.Год назад
In 2017 I spoke at FOSDEM and told everyone about how Containerised App technologies like AppImage, Snap, and Flatpak were all terrible and posed the question "What could go wrong?" if we introduced them. Now, in 2023, I am building a Desktop Linux distribution that only uses Flatpaks for it's Apps, so obviously, something went horrifically wrong, but not with Flatpaks. This talk revisits some ...
MicroOS Desktop - The Road to Daily Driving
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.3 года назад
The desktop operating systems we've been using for the last decades require far too much effort to maintain. What we need is a simple desktop that can be given to anyone, that always updates itself, that always repairs itself, and while the base system might always be up to date, users should be able to get to pick whatever apps they want to on top of it. This is the basic premise of the MicroO...

openSUSE Summit 2020 - MicroOS - The OS that does "just one job"

    I am mico os/Aeon user for a year now, so far very good experience since my switch from Fedora Workstation. Look great with the new installer for simple installation, but I missing more advanced options like encrypted partition with luks2, and dual boot support with Windows, and in geneal custom partition tools for more advanced user case. If laptop only have 1 ssd slots, and linux need to take over the whole disk, then there is an issue with dual boot windows, and I don't want to carry 2 laptop between home and work. Currently I am use single ssd dual boot Aeon and Windows 11, using grub for boot, with BitLock enable for Windows and luks2 enable for Aeon. My usage is 90% aeon and 10% windows, mostly for work, unencrypted disk is (viewed) as unacceptable by IT department for good reason(Suprise.. LOL). I hope the new new installer add advanced partition options at some point for power user and developer down the road.

    You might be a bit biased about "the best desktop". Is openSUSE Aeon an official openSUSE distro? Who are the developers? How are system-specific changes supposed to be handled? Who, ultimately, owns the system if I have absolutely no control over the system? Since the (hidden) developers make the changes whenever they want, not when I want, they effectively control my system, or my company's system, correct? If these are push updates instead of pull updates, how secure is this model? Right now, this is a non-Zero Trust-based system. For example, would you, Mr. Brown, be willing to enter into a BAA with my company to ensure that HIPAA-covered ePHI is secure. Microsoft will do so, if you use Enterprise (I spoke with their legal team). SUSE is able to offer the BAA, as I've used the SLED offering for company desktops in the past. In a Zero-Trust model, I would know the entire digital ecosystem, from start to implementation. I would know what's installed, what will be upgraded and why and the specifics of how that impacts critical infrastructure. I've read the single page on Aeon on openSUSE and it was lacking a LOT of detail. I've managed server farms and can tell you that with AIX I was in complete control of everything on that server. I kept digital and written logs, knew precisely the libraries, software and system files installed and could produce them if there was an audit, which there was. I can tell you that being audited by the FBI and the US federal government for financials is intimidating and not at all a joke. Since I have absolutely NO CONTROL over openSUSE Aeon, I have to trust that you and your developers are altruistic and professional. @~!16:45 you present a model about the design, but it is incomplete. For example, how are kernel changes handled (modprobe)? How are systemd modifications, additions or removals handled (e.g., I don't want to use journald but rsyslog instead, due to binary log files)? Isn't this type of update schedule like Windows 10/11? I have absolutely NO CONTROL OVER THE REBOOT!?! Daily reboots actually make Microsoft Windows look tame by comparison.

    I have been running Tumbleweed as my primary OS for years now, before that it was openSuSE, think since 7.x version. Currently running on my latest HP EliteBook 7840U/32GB/5G with 2TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD, and everything runs out of box, including 5G/ambient light/camera + IR, fingerprint, etc. Gonna try MicroOS using VBox for now, seems interesting, to get the feel. I am curious, as in as for a simple desktop OS, isn't flatpak based system will be bulkier, slower, etc, compared to Tumbleweed. As I see MicroOS will be much more secure as everything runs within it's own sandbox, which is cool. Ah yes, and I am KDE person, GNOME is too simple. Looking forward to Aeon. :)

There's no chance I guess that Suse ALP will be freely available to the community like opensuse leap is today? I'm a Debian user for 20+ years... or I was. I've tried Tumbleweed some years ago because I wanted a reliable rolling update distribution, preferably supporting BTRFS. Tumbleweed was /the/ obvious choice. I didn't know at that time that I would not look back for Debian once again. Almost. In reality, I have one particular workflow which is tied to Ubuntu, which I need sometimes, which raises the need of running two distributions alongside each other, or simply using two distinct laptops. I've opted for having two distinct laptops in order to avoid trashing my base system. OpenSUSE Aeon is the perfect solution for this trouble and I'm excited to try it and, I hope, I will never look back for Tumbleweed once again. I'm just waiting for KDE to be supported since I cannot live without it.

    In my opionion the best thing as an end user about the Tumbleweed / Leap situation was always that tinkering with and learning the ins and outs of my desktop system (Tumbleweed) translated well to server stuff (Leap). In that way I'll be a happy camper with openSUSE Tumbleweed and openSUSE Granite personally. Considering the different needs of desktop users compared to servers I would think most users would be well served between openSUSE Tumbleweed and openSUSE Aeon that I don't know how much a separate NewLeap desktop system would really be needed. Maybe the best solution would be an EPEL style repo to extend openSUSE Granite?

  • @aegiltech
    @aegiltech Год назад

    Capability is a function of capacity and ability. Whilst it is nice to offer everything, IMO, the writing is on the wall for Leap to be able to be maintained and should probably be descoped, at least until Granite comes out of which it is then is reevaluated whether the offering can be maintained.

    • @llothar68
      @llothar68 Год назад

      This is something that flatpak can and should solve. There is absolute no reason why a flatpak app should require the download/storage of a complete flatpak runtime if it only uses 20MB of it. Just In Time Downloading of Components of the Runtime is so natural, i don't understand why this does not exist yet. But for me flatpak is not until they allow non gui components like a server component install. They have a very very broken idea of what an application is. Even GUI apps need background services/server running. And they need to open the security a lot more for plugins and external program execution/data exchange. Apps are not isolated. This is going back to the days of DOS not into the future. Also a few toxic people need to be removed from the community, unfortuntely this little Putins are payed developers.

    Hi, we've deployed Bitwig Studio to flathub. Overall it works well but we had a few difficulties: - flatpak isn't pleasing the community yet for application plugins, see for example VST(s) - when distributing closed source app, you'd ideally have to build your app withing a flatpak "env" but the workflow, isn't there yet if your application has a very complicated build system - hard to build apps which requires extra download during build time, for example if you're using vcpkg I think flatpak is doing a good job for most application, but I still see a lot of things to be improved.
